Foreign resident guide
Korea National Health Screening for Foreign Residents
Being enrolled in Korea’s National Health Insurance does not by itself prove that you are due a screening now. Check your insurance status and your current screening eligibility separately before choosing a clinic or paying for extra tests.

The short answer
NHIS lists employee-insured people and specified self-employed-insured groups as general health-checkup targets. Its English guidance also explains when foreign employees and eligible foreign residents enter the insurance system. Those two facts do not establish your individual invitation or screening year. Use your NHIS notice or ask NHIS to confirm your current eligibility.
Check in this order
1. Confirm your NHIS enrolment
NHIS says foreigners working at an insured workplace are generally compulsorily subscribed. Its current English guidance also says eligible self-employed foreign residents who have stayed in Korea for more than six months are generally subject to mandatory subscription. Visa status and exceptions matter, so do not infer coverage from time in Korea alone.
2. Confirm this year’s screening eligibility
NHIS publishes broad target groups, but your current eligibility is personal and time-specific. Check the notice linked to your NHIS record or contact NHIS. The English consultant number published by NHIS is 033-811-2000; the general call centre is 1577-1000.
3. Separate covered screening from paid extras
NHIS states that the general health checkup is fully covered and includes 17 items, with additional items by age. Cancer screening follows separate eligibility and cost-sharing rules. A clinic’s private package, optional imaging or other non-covered item is a different purchase; ask for an itemised written total before agreeing.
4. Confirm the appointment with the provider
Eligibility does not create an appointment. Confirm that the provider can process your NHIS screening, the date and preparation instructions, the language you need, and which requested items would be charged separately.
National screening or a private package?
NHIS screening
Eligibility-led public benefit with an official target and covered scope. Confirm your personal status with NHIS first.
Private checkup package
A clinic-defined bundle with its own price, inclusions and optional extras. It does not prove or replace NHIS eligibility.
Common questions
Does being a foreign resident automatically make me eligible?
No. Foreign nationality alone neither qualifies nor disqualifies you. NHIS insurance enrolment and current health-screening eligibility are separate checks, so confirm both for your own record and screening year.
Is the NHIS general health checkup free?
NHIS currently states that the general health checkup is fully covered. Cancer-screening cost sharing follows separate rules, and any optional or non-covered add-on may create a charge.
Is a private package the same as the national screening?
No. A private package is a separately priced bundle offered by a clinic. Do not assume that private imaging, endoscopy or other add-ons are part of your NHIS-covered screening.
